Laura Hill Rao directs Buffalo State College’s Civic and Community Engagement Office where she oversees the efforts to engage students, faculty, and community partners in impactful and reciprocal relationships that address community priorities and create active citizens. Rao is instrumental in leading Buffalo State’s deep commitments to providing students with experiential civic learning opportunities which provide community partners with the talent, creativity, and support of our students. As a result of its deep and broad civic engagement commitments, with Laura’s support Buffalo State has earned the Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement Classification in 2015, was awarded the Washington Center Higher Education Civic Engagement Award in 2016, and has been appointed to the President’s Community Service Honor Roll eight times. Rao is an experiential learner herself, with significant background in high-impact experiential education.


  •  M.S. in Environmental Education from Lesley University through the Audubon Expedition Institute's experiential, community-based Master's degree program
  •  B.A. in Psychology from SUNY Buffalo
